Scope of the AIDS Memorial
AIDSmemorial.nl is a monument on the internet that aims to keep alive the memory of the men, women and children who have died as a consequence of HIV or AIDS. The monument is focused on commemorating those who were born, lived or died in the Netherlands or who were significant for the Dutch people.
Sources
The AIDS Memorial uses two kinds of sources:
- Personal information that people have given us voluntarily, through a form, email or by online submission. The contributors are referred to by their first name and by their relationship to the deceased.
- Biographies, in memoriams, death announcements and articles from publicly available sources. When possible, the relatives are informed about this in advance.
The number of deaths displayed on the NAMES page comes from the Central Office of Statistics (CBS).
Adding information yourself
AIDSmemorial.nl has been online since November 2007, and all visitors of the website are invited to submit information. You can help correct mistakes, or you can make an entry to keep alive the memory of people who are and will be remembered here.
Adding names
You can add a personal story and the name of the one you'd like to remember to AIDSmemorial.nl. You can do this as a partner, relative, friend, acquaintance, colleague, buddy, soulmate, admirer or any other relationship you had with the deceased.
If you choose to retain the anonymity of the commemorated person, we ask that you at least provide their first name, year of death and age, to avoid someone being listed more than once. We prefer to see a death announcement card or an obituary with a source reference.
Additions and corrections
Besides the personal story, it's also possible to submit other material in the three sections “Remembrance”, “A Life in Pictures” and “Legacy”:
- Typed text
Personal stories, but also a goodbye note or (un)published writings of the deceased.
- Pictures and videos
Photos and videos that show the deceased, privately, on vacation, at work or being active in the community. Images of objects that (s)he has left behind. Photos of his or her association or business. A picture of the headstone. Perhaps a goodbye video or a prevention video in which he or she took part.
- Music
Recordings of music that was created by the deceased.
- Scans of documents
Scans of the death announcement card or a business card. Prevention posters or brochures in which the deceased was featured.
How to provide materials
The option to submit material can be found on the NAMES page and on every NAMES profile existing within the monument. By clicking on 'submit story/photo” a window opens where you can save your comments. You will also be asked for your personal information, in case of further inquiries. Correspondence with the project is mostly done by email. Through this submission window you can also add pictures. In the box “Select a computer file” you can select and add a picture from your own computer. If you experience any problems, you can also send the pictures as attachments to info@aidsmemorial.nl
You can also make an appointment with a volunteer of the NAMES Project. We have the facilities to scan pictures and documents. You can bring your materials here or send them to us. After the scans are made, you can take the materials home, or have them sent back to you. Check the Contact page of this site for the address.
Donating materials
If you're looking for a worthwhile place for your pictures and documents, you can consider donating these to the NAMES Project Netherlands Foundation. Just get in touch with us if you choose to do so.
